Type Locality and Naming

Along Kuryshbaba, South. Turkmenistan. E.I. Saperson, A.A. Zheleznov, 1962 (404, p.894).

Synonym: Kurtyshskaya Formation, Куртышская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Silty (aleuritic), calcareous clays, gray, greenish-gray marls. Thickness up to 240 m.


Lithology Pattern:

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Lies conformably on the Ilyalin Fm

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the Ahchakain Fm

Regional extent

South Pre-Aral (pre-Aral), East Ustyurt. It is correlated with the Kultaban Fm of the Kyzylkum.

Contains foraminifera - Globigerina turkmenica Khal., Bolivina asiatica Moroz., Acarinina rugosoaculeata Subb.; radiolarians - Cenodiscus vulgaris Moks., C. subtilus Moks., Sethopyramis victori Lipm., nanoplankton of the NP-17 zone - Discoaster saipanensis.

Belongs to the Middle Eocene (Bartonian stage). Until the decision of the MGS (358), it was attributed to the Upper Eocene.
